Green light to migration

An oil platform in the North Sea has changed the colour of its lighting to green, in order not to attract migratory birds. As a result, only a few dozen birds were found circling it in the night, as opposed to thousands in the past, when yellow (sodium) lamps were used. There are hundreds of oil platforms in the North Sea, and when migratory birds circle the platforms all night, they can get exhausted and fall into the water to their death.

A decision will be made in the new year whether all the company's platforms will be lit up green. Incidentally, the workers on board have said they found it more pleasant to work in the green light, rather than the harsh yellow.

  8. Very interesting...I would think the green lights would be easier on the eyes of those working on the platform.  Linda in Washington state

  9. I think I'd prefer the green lighting, also.  Especially in this time of year when artificial (non-sunlight) lighting is so important, benefiting the birds and workers is great.  I like seeing the photos for the difference.
