Trip to Tolsta

Another afternoon outing for yours truly, and not that far from yesterday's venue. Tolsta is only 4 miles north of Gress. Conditions could not have been more different. A blustery westerly wind kept me sheltered to some degree (Tolsta lies on the east coast of the island), but it wasn't too warm. The forecast mentioned rain, but I only encountered a few dribs and drabs.

The reason for my visit was to look for wargraves in the cemetery there, but I found only two in addition to the collection I photographed in March 2006. I descended to the beach and walked the mile or so north to the carpark. I only had to wait for about 10 minutes until the bus turned up. It was full of primary school kiddies, who were being dropped off outside their respective homes in Tolsta. Darkness fell as we left the village, and the return trip to Stornoway wound its way through the darkened villages of Gress, Back, Coll and Tong.

Please don't be fooled by the lightness of the pictures. It was a heavily overcast afternoon, and I took the last picture literally 5 minutes before the sun was due to set.

  3. How sad to see the ages of the soldiers whose memorial stones you photographed.
They were just starting out on life...God love them!  And there they lie eternally facing the sea surrounding their homeland.  War has been a rampaging robber of the lives of the youth of many lands over the centuries.  Boys/men who become caught up in their rights to protect their birthplace and families.  How alike we all are if you think of it... no matter what country we come from.   Each wishing to protect our families, our homeland and our way of life.
How did these basic instincts or tenets become so diversified on each continent until we could no longer recognise them in each other?
Wonderful photos Guido.  Such beautiful beaches and pure blue seas.
What thick winter coats the sheep are wearing now. I have two duvets on now that we are experiencing frosty weather.  Brrrrrr!
I wonder what peat smells like when it is burning in the fire?

  4. I really enjoyed viewing these pictures.  Looking at the pics of the beach made me long to be near the ocean.  You are so lucky to live so close.  I also enjoyed the sheep!!  Very nice pictures, your countryside is beautiful.

  5. Wonderful pictures.  The "footprints in the sand" was very clever Guido!  I'll have to try that sometime.  I love the beach and never tire of looking at pictures of the water or the beach itself.  And the sheep are quite friendly looking...maybe they thought you had a treat for them.  Thanks once again for sharing your corner of the world with us.   Linda
