Wednesday notes

What an absolutely filthy night we've just had. Howling winds, lashing rains and to top it all a thunderstorm at 6 in the morning. We rarely get thunder in the isles; if we do get it, it is an indication of a deeply unstable atmosphere. In order for thunder and lightning to occur, the difference in temperature between cloudtops and groundlevel should be 40C or greater. I was wondering about the flashing lights, but then some deep rumbles came carried on the wind. It was difficult to make out what was wind noise and what was actual thunder.

As I type, the sun has come out and we're "only" having showers. Through the afternoon, the showers will join up and the wind will once again rise to gale- if not severe gale force. No improvement forecast for the rest of the week.

The people of Fiji are on alert for tropical cyclone Daman, technically a tropical storm, which is passing Rotuma Island and is heading for the main islandin the archipelago towards the weekend. Winds will be increasing towards the 55 knots (60 mph) mark as the days go by.

Still on the theme of extreme weather, the BBC has picked up on the emergency in the states of Oregon and Washington in the US. One town has apparently had to be evacuated, and Interstate 5 is under 10 feet of water in places.

  1. You are lucky not to have thunderstorms often, we have many during the summer and I don't care for them at all.  My heart goes out to the people in Oregon & Washington, they showed images on tv, it is just terrible.

  2. Yes it is still an absolute mess in some areas.  Now we are even having avalanches in the nearby mountains, one person killed.  And I-5 is still closed causing many problems for the truckers, they are also worrying about it being stable when it opens.  A good thunderstorm here would have been enough.  Joni

  4. I have not heard from my Seattle relatives today, tho last I heard they were doing better than most in their particular area.

Must have been loud wind near you to have difficulty differentiating it from thunder.
