On August 31st, 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales was killed in a carcrash in Paris. The car she was travelling in was careering through an underpass at speeds exceeding 60 mph, trying to outrun paparazzi. After dealing a glancing blow to another vehicle, never traced afterwards, the Mercedes veered out of control and slammed into a pillar of the underpass. Two of the occupants, the driver (Henri Paul) and the Princess's lover, Dodi Al-Fayed, were killed instantly. Princess Diana died several hours later in hospital. A security agent escaped with serious injuries.
Diana was a hugely popular figure, and in a way a victim of her own success. She was the estranged wife of Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, with whom she had two sons. As is the case with many high-profile figures, newspaper journalists from around Europe and the globe were hounding them every step of the way, trying to get 'that' photograph. It was this intrusion that led to an unexpected change of plans. The driver was called upon, unexpectedly, to drive the vehicle. He had been drinking, and was 2 times over the UK drink drive limit for blood alcohol.
An extensive investigation, spanning 3 years and headed by former Metropolitan Police Chief Constable Lord Stevens, concluded that the Princess died in a tragic accident, and that there were no credible indications that a conspiracy to murder had been in place. Lord Stevens also reveiled that Diana was not pregnant, not engaged to Dodi Al-Fayed and neither about to become engaged to him.
In a reaction, Dodi Al-Fayed's father Mohammed, the business tycoon who owns the famous London department store Harrods, has refuted the findings of the inquiry. He maintains that the conspiracy to murder was there, and the report is part of the cover-up.
In July 2007, a concert will be held in memory of Princess Diana. Tickets are already sold out.
August 31st, 1997, will be one of those dates where everybody remembers what they were doing upon hearing the news - in this case, that Princess Di had died.

diana's death was a tragidy, she was a fantastic lady who was not afraid to be who she was which i admire. august 31st i will be lighting a candle for diana and dodi and telling my children how because of the greed of the media this fantastic lady was taken from us all. rest in peace englands rose x
ReplyDeleteLike a true English rose Diana blossomed. As her petals fall that was Charles hurting her. Then she faded and died but not before giving off two side shoots William and Harry. Our loss heaven's gain. Sleep tight Diana for you will always be in our hearts and remembered. TRACEY ANN OF BLYTH.
ReplyDeleteIt surprises me that Camilla has been allowed to attend Princess Diana,s Memorial Service on august 31st 2007. Diana said in that famous interview on BBC that there were 3 people in her marriage and we all know she was referring to Camilla Parker-Bowles as she was then. She caused Diana much unhappiness and Charles even was in touch with her on their honeymoon, He had cufflinks that she had bought him.I saw a documentry on this and there was a hell of a row.
ReplyDeleteI do believe Charles married Diana to give him heirs to the throne and never loved Diana. It saddens me that this woman is on the front row of the service alonngside Charles. Diana would turn in her grave.
there was no one like princess diana and it will never be. she loved life and her two son,she was more loved by people all over the world and she will never be forgotton by all of us.the media tormented her she just wanted to be left a lone they are to blame for alot of things in diana life and so is charles and camilla. he will never be king or ca,illa never will be queen in alot of peoples eyes. Diana should be here instead of in her grave we lost someone who loved the world and helped everyone she never hurt no one she was a very kind lady and she lives in our hearts.
