Calm day, with a pale sun poking through the clouds.
Fiji has dodged a silver bullet in the shape of tropical cyclone Daman. The storm razed the island of Cikobia at 3 am local time today, with winds of 150 mph. All houses and vegetation were destroyed, but the 65 inhabitants evacuated into caves and survived. The hurricane centre in Nadi (Fiji's capital) had warned the two main islands to be prepared for the storm to strike, but Daman kindly swerved around these centres of population.
The storm is presently heading south into the open ocean.
Kenya is battling swarms of locusts, which have been laying eggs in the northeast of the country. When these hatch, in 2 weeks from now, they could form into swarms. A swarm of locusts is capable of eating as much as 2,500 people. A single locust can eat its own body-weight each day.
Did you meet John Darwin? The man from Hartlepool, England, who hid in his own home for 3 years after his 'death' in a canoeing accident? He has been sighted all over the world, it now appears. His wife says their sons were in on the act, but they deny all knowledge. Oh, the web of lies and deceit one weaves for a few bucks.
