The approach taken to mice in the Isle of Canna is a world away from what is going on in Spain today. Last year, all Canna fieldmice were carefully trapped and transported to Edinburgh Zoo for safekeeping whilst the rats on the island were exterminated. The rats needed culling as they were predating on groundnesting birds.
In Spain today, they are burning fields to exterminate a plague of voles. It is not known what has caused their numbers to spiral. The mice are being destroyed as they are devastating crops of beetroot and other vegetables. Oh, this is slightly redolent of China recently, where 2 billion mice infested a village following floods.

Yuck....I can't imagine living anywhere, along with 2 billion mice. Linda in western Washington state
ReplyDeleteThat is really gross, I'm so thankful of where I live. I hate to hear those things about China, when the Olympics will be there next summer. They've been getting alot of bad press lately. I see they're trying to conteract by having ceremonies already and showing how nice it is there. I just hope it's true. Joni
