Evening notes

The sun set half an hour ago, and the fog has retreated to the edges of the Arnish Hills. When the ferry left for Ullapool at 7pm, it blasted its horn all the way out of port.

Still on the theme of weather, Hurricane Dean has made its final landfall in the Mexican province of Vera Cruz, with winds of 85 mph. The storm will move inland, dumping vast amounts of rain on the way before dissipation, within 24 hours. I repeat the heads-up that some of Dean's moisture may find its way into the southwestern United States. No other hurricanes are likely in the Atlantic, although a cyclone could form in the Western Pacific, south of Japan.

Closer to home, two human remains have been discovered amongst the ruins of the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall, which burned to the ground on Friday night. It would appear that they are those of a mother and son, both reported missing, presumed dead.
