Tropical depression Erin is dumping vast amounts of rain on Texas - 40 to 48 inches is 1,000 to 1,200 mm of rain, more than the average annual rainfall total. Hurricane Dean will dump some more next week, in addition to the wind damage which is quite likely. The flooding has reportedly already left several people dead in Texas.
Speaking of Dean, this category 1 hurricane blew the roof off a hospital in St Lucia. Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and the Yucatan Peninsula should be on their guard for this hurricane, which will achieve category 4 strength with winds of 130 knots or 150 mph.
