Thursday notes

Took me 45 minutes to compile the hurricane bulletin just now, and I'm blessing my stars for not being in the firing line of Sepat. I dread to think what the devastating impact of that monster is going to be. Those who are getting a call from Dean later today or tomorrow aren't in for a teaparty either.

Anyway, here in the islands we continue with our non-summer. It's drizzly and cool this morning. Two of our guests left on the early ferry, complaining bitterly of the weather. Excuse me, this is Scotland, the Hebrides - you're not on the Costa del Skincancer here. Some people come here in the winter, specifically to see the storms. Only to find themselves confronted by blazing sunshine. I once got sunburned in January near Mallaig, whilst walking a southfacing beach in temperatures of 0C / 32F with a very bright sun.

Last night, Peru was shaken by a severe earthquake, registering 7.9 on the Richter scale. The quake was centered to the south of the capital, Lima, and is so far known to have claimed 337 lives, with hundreds injured or missing. The tremor, followed by four aftershocks measuring between 5 and 6 on the Richter scale, lasted for several minutes and caused panic on the streets of Lima, which were packed with rush hour traffic. The full effects of the quake, centering on the district of Ica, are ye
t to become clear. More here.

  1. Yup!   You've got to put up or shut up about the weather in Britain...not just in the Hebrides Guido. I supose we are used to such inclement changes.  Those who come from sunnier climes and experience sunshine all year round must wonder what planet they have landed on sometimes.  It's certainly challenging!
See?  Those poor folks who are in line for these scary hurricanes must have to accept a lot more than us because of their geographical position in the world.  I'm so glad I live where I do...rare earthquakes that don't do much damage; Winter storms when we expect to batten down the hatches.  Recent floods apart though...

  2. Saw that Lima quake on news, 7.9 and 3 dozen aftershocks, many mudslides, many more dead, injured, missing.  Earth just doing what it does I guess.  Surprised visitors don't know to expect overcast weather in Hebrides.  Following Dean which looks to hit land in Caribbean.  Stay well.  xoxo CATHY

  3. Those poor people in Peru..the news on the TV regarding that earthquake looks dismal.  My cousin just got back from Peru...she's a mountain climber/hiker fanatic.  But, she's also a Red Cross volunteer so I can see her heading back there in that capacity.  She volunteered in New York after 9-11 and also after Katrina, she was in New Orleans.    Linda in Washington state

Thats shocking news about Peru, very sad for the people who lost there lives or family members.Looking back on our last winter in the UK i have to think our weather is better than the summer we are having this year. We might end up upside down like Australia. They have our weather we have theres. Something to be said about global warming. Hope you have a lovely weekend
