Saturday notes

Rain tipping down all day today. Enough about our weather. More than enough weather elsewhere.

After a fire destroyed part of the seafront in Skegness, Lincolnshire, on Thursday, a major fire has ripped through a hotel in Newquay, Cornwall. The building has been completely gutted, and one person has died. More of the missing, presently numbering 6, could be in the ruins of the building. It was in use as a hotel, mainly housing older holidaymakers.

The victims of a 1939 experiment, which tried to induce stuttering in children, have been awarded $25,000 to $900,000 pay-outs. The people concerned, now in their 70s and 80s, were subjected to harassment and other forms of psychological pressure in a bid to test a 'scientific theory' from pioneering speech pathologist Dr Wendell Johnston. None of the children developed stuttering. The University of Iowa has issued a public apology. More here.

  1. I saw on the news here in Seattle about that fire, it was terrible.  It's cloudy here today with intermittent sun, very mild in the 60's, I think we're spoiled.  Joni

  2. That stuttering experiment news was the first I'd heard about that, very sad.... wish they would say what the tormenting consisted of... I'd like to judge for myself if the victims were paid enough.
