Saturday notes

Afternoon all, from a bright but overcast (by thin clouds) Stornoway. Not a bad day at all in terms of weather. Better than last Monday, when flooding hit the area surrounding the Bayhead River here in Stornoway. Pictures in the local paper showed cars making their way through several inches of floodwater when emerging from the Castle Grounds, and the footpath between the Golf Club and the Bayhead Bridge was under about 8 inches of water by the look of things.

Heard that a second mining accident in the US state of Indiana has claimed three lives. Six miners are still missing following the collapse in a mine in Utah earlier this week.

The people in the Portuguese town of Praia de Luz, where Madeleine McCann went missing 100 days ago, are said to be turning against Maddie's parents. They blame the couple themselves for the fate that befell their young daughter back in May, for leaving her unattended whilst going out for the evening. The villagers also blame the McCanns for a drop-off in tourism in the area.

As I mentioned a few days ago, the Arctic seems to have become a focal point for international posturing. After the Russians planted a flag, the Canadians are now going to construct military bases in the region, and the Danes (who I omitted from my lists of claimants) are conducting a survey mission into the North Polar basin. I could not agree more with the person who stated that the North Pole should become a demilitarised zone (like Antarctica), to be kept in its pristine state. However, I already mentioned Prudhoe Bay in northern Alaska.

  2. These mining accidents are very sad.  It seems like after all these years, they could figure out a way to make mining safer.  I realize that the ground around the mines is unstable at times, but it still seems like there is something that could be done.  The sun is shining brightly here in the Tacoma area this morning. The only clouds I see are big white fluffy ones.  It's supposed to be in the low 70's according to the weather guru at KOMO TV in Seattle.   Linda in Washington state

  3. I love the pics of the beach and mountains.  I agree with Linda, I had an uncle die in a coal mine in Montana 100 years ago, I guess things haven't improved much since then.  Have a nice day.  Joni

  4. There was another mine disaster here in Indiana yesterday, but not as bad as the one in Utah (I think).  It is a shame that the people in Praia de Luz have turned on the McCann family.  I'm not sure I don't agree that they bear some responsibility for having left the kids on their own, but I understood that they were checking on them regularly and that it was not a strange thing to do where they were staying.  The one(s) who should be blamed for the drop in tourism is the person(s) responsible for abducting the little girl.  The family is dealing with enough right now.
