Sunday notes

After a morning with drizzly intervals, the sun is coming out. Perfect weather for midges.

Warnings about tombstoning appear to be going unheard, after reports from southern England that a man, egged on by three of his 'friends' jumped off a 20 m (70 ft) high rock on the Dorset coast. He was found in the water unconscious and fitting, after his friends ran off. Someone dived to the bottom of the sea to retrieve the casualty, who was then taken ashore where he received medical attention.

Hurricane Flossie is beginning to raise concerns in Hawaii, as the path of the cyclone appears to be edging closer and closer to the Big Island. Flossie has maintained winds of 115 knots around its centre (115 knots = 130 mph or 210 kph). The Hurricane Center in Honolulu warns people not to focus on the windless centre, but rather on the 80 mile radius around it, which shows winds between 40 and 130 mph. At present, the storm will pass more than 100 miles south of Hawaii, but its weather will still impact the islands.

Another cyclone forms far east of the Philippines, which may well see its first typhoon of 2007 by the end of this new week.

  1. And midges are what then? lol rock-jumping is called tombstoning?  Fits, actually.  Glad this man survived.  Here we mean it as taking the rubbings from anicent headstones for the intricacy and craftsmanship of an earlier time.  Thanks for keeping an eye on Flossie, you're far ahead of our 'casters.  CATHY

  2. Midges??   Nice 'friends' this guy had, sure hope he's going to be fine!!  Thanks for breaking down the 'knots' for us, 130 mph winds can cause much more damage in MY mind... LOL!!

    Take Care,

  3. Re: Tombstoning?   When will they ever learn?   Let's hope this chappie now knows how to choose his friends in  the future.
I'm so glad we visited Scotland in the early summer.  We missed all the midgies then.  I reckon it will always be bluebell time when I next visit.
