Hoax, spam, phishing

If you have account(s) on eBay and/or PayPal, please be VERY wary of emails pretending to come from these sites. When eBay sends you mail, they usually include your full registered name, not just "Customer". I am unfamiliar with PayPal's procedures, but they will have similar safeguards.

Joann asked me to warn of a scam, pretending to be PayPal, designed to fool you into submitting your login information. It says that there have been illegitimate attempts from "an overseas IP-address" at logging in, and you have to resubmit your login-information.

NEVER put your foot into that sort of thing. NEVER click on any links.

If you use eBay, PayPal or other sites with financial implications, the best thing to do (if you don't already) is to generate an email address, dedicated solely to Internet transactions. You can then safely ignore spam on any of your other email addies.

  1. Thanks for the heads up Guido.  I haven't a clue how to generate another e-mail for sole use.  Must look into that.

  2. Very good advice.  I use both eBay and PayPal and know that neither will ever ask for your log in information.  If you get an email from them, then you should log into their site from another browser window and go to your account information.  Also, as far as eBay goes, any email that they send you to your home address, they will also send to your "messages" folder of your "My eBay" account.  If you get one without the other, then it's most likely a phishing scam.

  3. As an eBay user, Jim has had these hoax emails on several occasions. I think it would be easy for some people to fall for them as they look very offical at first sight.

  5. We get these constantly from spammers claiming to be Ebay or Paypal.  I do the spoof thing each time and always get the same reply, it is not a valid email.

  6. Excellent advice, esp for net newcomers.  I saw the PayPal hoax at Joann's, it makes me glad I opted out of keeping finances online.  CATHY
