Sunday 10 February

It won't come as a surprise that we're having a gloriously sunny day today with no wind worth speaking of. That caught you out, didn't it?

At the moment, the Safe Scandinavia oilplatform in the North Sea, 130 miles off Aberdeen, is at the centre of a full-blown security alert. It prompted the evacuation of 539 people from the rig, amidst unconfirmed reports of a device and involvement of a woman on board. Thirteen helicopters and a plane participated in the evacuation.

A few days ago, one of the French trawlers that regularly call in here to change crews, was at the centre of a major rescue operation. In the middle of a force 9 gale, a crew member required evacuation by helicopter. The trawler was bobbing up and down in 30 feet high waves and it needed two attempts before a winchman could be lowered on the deck of the ship to recover the crewman.
