Saturday 9 February

Does it surprise anybody if I start by saying it's blowing a gale, water is flying over the causeway and it's another horrible day? No? Good. Although, the sun is just coming out.

One of my pet-hates, people not using sat-navs appropriately, came to the fore again. This time it's about lorry drivers who damage railway bridges by not paying attention to height restrictions. Other people have been known to misinterpret the directions from the device and drive onto a railway track. Some have narrowly escaped death or serious injury when a train came through. What's wrong with using your own eyes, and use a map?

  1. morning guido, sorry you got awful weather again, it's lovely here. Even when lorry drivers use their eyes and a map they still manage to get stuck under bridges! take care mrs t x

  2. hmmm...well we've gone from a cloudy heady warm day yesterday to a bright, sunny, freezing cold day today. But no rain. For a change. I'm off to see the sheep.

  3. Glad that the sun is coming out Guido.  We do not have sat nav nor do we want it.  It can be very inaccurate and has caused quite a few problems.  If you were a fan or Morecambe and Wise, I know you will enjoy what I posted on the other journal

  5. We use Sat-Nav to go to our gigs and if used properly (as we do ours) we get from A - B fine with no problems; we came home one night in thick fog and had we not had the sat nav to guide us we would not have made it home in one piece!!! Common sense and paying attention is essential when used hand in glove with sat nav. The weather here in Northants is glorious.....almost like a summer's day!!!

  6. geesh, I have to remember not to visit your place in winter; that wind would drive me crazy. Looking forward to reading more down the line when your weather gets a bit better, hopefully spring?

  7. I sometimes think those things are worse than using a good old fashioned map.  I saw an episode of a sit-com on TV recently where they were using one & ending up driving into a lake.  Come on....are people really that stupid?   It was funny on TV but not in real life.  Linda about to start loading up and moving out in WA

  8. Oh how I agree with you about Sat Nav's..Mary kindly bought me one ages ago. I tried it out three or four times in areas that I was  familiar with and on each occasion the stupid woman...yes she was a woman!! took me to in directions I knew were wrong..I gave up on her..Only sorry that Mary spent all that money on the B. thing...anyway I gave it away...so back to map and eyes. much more reliable  Sorry about your weather would you like to hear it is glorious with us here in Box. Love Sybilx

  10. They cost a lot of money when its just as easy, and cheaper, to use a map.
If I get lost then I use my God given common sense and my tongue to ask for directions.
I agree with you Guido..why can't they use their nous?

I couldn't believe the weather today here in the Lakes.  We could have sunbathed.
The sun is much higher in the sky at noon and it feels so good to see it again!  We have waited a long time for this.
Hope you get better weather soon.

  11. I am going to be in a minority here but I love our TomTom.  Of course we don't drive into lakes, off cliffs or onto railroad tracks either!  It has been wonderful for us to plug in an address in another county or town when we have to pick up (or deliver) a bicycle.  We aren't stressed trying to find our way.  I guess it is as anything else, if you can't use your own judgement while using it... don't!!!

  12. I can't stand GPS systems. I'd much rather use a map. I've used a map to get me all over this country from one end to the other and back and it worked just fine!
Today it's in the high 70°'s.

  13. I agree about the Sat-Navs. It's usually best to use a good old fashioned map.  Phyllis
