Friday 8 February

Savage day, with stormforce winds of 56 mph, gusting to 73 mph. Had to take the bin in after the weekly garbage collection, and nearly went flying up the road with it. Just taking a glance at the news reports, which make gloomy reading. An explosion in a US sugar factory, people killed in a council meeting there, rats eating crops in Bangladesh. Cheerful...

The sugar refinery is on the Savannah River in Port Wentworth which is part of the massive port system herre in the Savannah area.  I've been watching live coverage of the situation most of the night.  They are still battling the fire.  So far 41 have been taken to the hospital, 10 airlifted to an intensive burn unit in
Augusta, Georgia, and there are 6 souls still missing.  At the time of the explsion there were a little more than 100 people on duty.  The refinery was a massive complex and a huge portion of it has collapsed.  They won't be able to fully assess the damage until after daylight this morning.  Emergency personnel from all over Georgia and South Carlolina have come to help.  There is a massive effort to get the fire under control.  I keep using the word massive because this is just a huge fire at a huge complex and it is affecting a huge amount of lives.

  3. Careful when out Guido, we don't want you doing a 'Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz' on us with your trusty bin.   Lol!
As I read on in your entry I thought of those poor people in that fire...we just never know what the day or night will bring us.  Life can be so cruel at times.
I couldn't access the BBC news report link you left.  It must have something missing from the link.
It doesn't bear thinking about though when you mention deaths in a council meeting...or rats eating crops in Bangladesh.  The latter farmers have enough on their plates each year without this pestilence.

  5. This news once again shocks me Guido over the Sugar Factory. It is so so sad and the hurricanes this week too.Everytime you put on the news thers something .My heart aches fro these peoples families who have lost loved ones.I do hope you will stay inside let the bin go next time you will no doubt get a new one.I have been in the same position many a time.I lived on a hill once and when I used to come home mine used to be right at the bottom with the wind and I had to push it back to the top about 400mts PHEW I was shattered when I got in.They used to be rolling down like dominoes.Good job they were all numbered. Take Care God Bless Kath astoriasand http://journals.aol.co.uk/astoriasand/MYSIMPLERHYMES
