Tuesday 5 February

Very sunny day, but very cold as well. Around sunrise time, 8 am, the mercury dipped to -2C / 28F for 3 hours at a stretch. Only now are we somewhere above freezing.

If any readers in the US are voting in today's primaries, I wish you wisdom in choosing the right person for your candidacy. I follow developments with a weary eye, trying to suppress the notion that there is at times more money than sense at work in the presidential elections. Even if I were eligible to vote, I have no preference for any candidate from either party.

The troubled Harris Tweed industry in Lewis has had a conference together to map out a future. Last year, the biggest factory, on Sandwick Road in Stornoway, was bought over by a Yorkshire textiles magnate, who wanted only 5 patterns for men's jackets. The other two mills, in Shawbost and Carloway (some 18 and 25 miles west of Stornoway) have been given a combined total of £300,000 in grant aid to set up business anew. It is worth noting that Harris Tweed is a registered trademark, which can only be used on cloth which has been processed wholly in the Western Isles.

  1. I hope for the worker's sake that something can come out of this conference about which dierection to go along with when utilising the grant they have received.  It would be another toll of the bell for those people who might be left jobless.
    Then what?

  3. Wisdom seems to be lost on most Americans when it comes to voting.  Too many celebrities are involved touting this and that about a candidate.....it is a bunch of nonsense right now.  For a person to vote for someone simply because "soandso celebrity" is endorsing them shows total ignorance.
