Friday notes

Cloudy but fairly bright, with occasional sunny intervals today. Temperatures still no great shakes, 11C again. Down south, they're breathing a sigh of relief as the mercury crosses the 60F boundary again in an upward movement.

Still horrified by events in Rangoon, but still nothing anybody can do about it. I'm waiting for movements out of New Delhi or Beijing, as I said a day or so ago. The UN can come and talk their heads off, but it's India and China that pull the strings in Burma.

A new edition of the Highway Code has been published, which hints that smoking behind the wheel could leave you in deep water. Lighting a cigarette distracts you from the road, and could even leave you with zero hands on the steeringwheel. A prosecution for driving without due care and attention could follow. Critics have said that the Highway Code treats drivers like small children. However, that is unfortunately the way some drivers do behave on the road.

  1. I agree with you on Beijiing and New Delhi having their hands on the puppet strings in Rangoon.  Strange I should open up the computer and read this as Bryan and I had only just been commenting on it.   Again its all about fuel.  In this case gas.  This 'Newly Industrialising China' needs all the fuel it can get as it lifts its people out of poverty. So neither they nor India will want to rock the boat.
A remark Bryan made just before when the photographer was shot by the soldier as he pleaded with him was.. 'I wonder what it would have meant to the Chinese government had he been Chinese?'  What then?  A moot point I think.

It's bitterly cold down here in the Lakes.  It's more like winter today.

  2. We finally have gotten rid of most smoking in public places here -- cars are not included.  They can't even get people to stop using their cell phones while driving, so I doubt it will ever go anywhere.  It is dangerous.  Linda

  3. Imagine that...no smoking while driving.  Over here, they'll get you for being on your cell phone, putting on makeup, shaving, even eating an ice cream cone or drinking a soda (and of course drinking alcohol is out)...I guess all we can do is just drive and pay attention to those around us.  But be sure and find a good staion on your car radio before you hit the road, changing stations could be a distraction too...oh and don't forget the kids in the back seat. Let them half kill each other, throw-up or choke on their bottle, but don't try tending to them when you're driving. Maybe we should all go back to the horse & buggy.  Linda in Washington state
