I have this wee gadget in my desktop tray, next to the computer clock, which shows local temperature. It went down to 4C / 39F a minute ago, although it has now gone up to 6C / 43F. It cleared up a while ago and the wind has dropped away. More of this in months to come, I'm sure.
What was also a barrel of laughs was a powercut at 6.25pm. It sounds as if the area around Stornoway was off supply; our local radio station was off air, but the BBC stations were not. They are transmitted from aerials at Achmore, 10 miles southwest of here. It took an hour for power to come back on. By that time, we had dug out all the candles and oil lamps. Fortunately, sunset is not until 8pm, so there was no real problem. The cooker runs on gas (apart from the oven).

ReplyDeleteI'm thankful for my wood stove, not only good for heating the house on those cold winter days but there's room on top for a small pan, in which I could heat up some food if needed. I also have a propane feed BBQ grill and camp stove. Of course those have to be used outdoors, not in the house. Linda in Washington state

ReplyDeleteThe only power cuts I remember having was when the suppliers went on strike. Then there was a rush on candles, hurricane lamps and parrafin. We made our own parrafin stove to cook on as our flat then was warm air gas central heatining powered up by electricity.
Its amazing how you can improvise when you have to. And what you can get up to when you have no TV..hahaha!
