Peruvian mystery

An object has come down from the skies above Peru and smashed into the ground, creating a large crater. It measures 30 feet across and 20 feet deep. It is not clear whether it is a meteorite or a fireball. Following the impact, people venturing near the site have reported feeling ill. It is speculated that the pool of fetid water, which formed at the impact location, may be emitting methane and other gases formed by decomposition of organic matter.

Another cause may be a phenomenon described as Mass Sociogenic Illness. Basically, if someone reports feeling ill, others may unconsciously take over the symptoms. Feelings of anxiety and trepidation may accompany a visit to the crash site. In the case of MSI, there is no objective cause for the symptoms.

The likelihood of this latter being a major contributary factor appears low, as a bull is also reported to have fallen ill after coming close to the crater.

  2. Yeah, I rather doubt that the bull has MSI.  :)  Interesting to note this story.
