Louisiana and Texas are waking up to an unpleasant surprise in the shape of Hurricane Humberto. This made landfall at around 2 am local time near High Island TX with winds topping 90 mph to the north of the centre. Hurricane warnings are in force from High Island east to Cameron LA, and a tropical storm warning further east to Intracoastal City LA. These are likely to be lowered or downgraded later today as Humberto weakens on traversing land.
Heavy rains are expected across Louisiana, southeastern Arkansas and northern Mississippi, with totals between 5 and 10 inches, possibly topping 15 inches in places.
Humberto was not expected to reach hurricane strength when I last looked at the forecast yesterday evening, so I hope anyone in its path is alright.
Across the Pacific, tropical storm Nari is making for Okinawa and beyond that South Korea, with typhoon force winds within 24 hours.
