Evening notes

The foot-and-mouth outbreak in Egham caused a bit of a panic at two livestock sales elsewhere in the UK. In the Derbyshire town of Bakewell, 8,000 sheep were detained at an auction mart, until the mart's operators obtained a license to move the animals. A ram at a sale in Lanark, southeast of Glasgow, was seriously ill which led to the detention of 700 sheep and 1,000 farmers on the premises. Luckily, whatever was ailing the ram, it wasn't foot-and-mouth.

The tropical system off Texas has augmented into tropical storm Humberto, which won't bring more than a force 9 gale to Galveston. Please be prepared for 5 to 15 inches of rain though - even after landfall. There are Local Hurricane Statements in force for Lake Charles LA and Galveston / Houston TX

The earthquake in Indonesia caused a localised tsunami - a wave just under 1 metre in height (that's 3 feet and a bit) occurred along the Sumatran coast. The watches for tsunamis have now largely been cancelled.

  1. "The watches for tsunamis have now largely been cancelled."   WOW, that's a relief for those people who live in that area.    Linda in Washington state
