Be prepared

Two contrasting stories from the Scottish mountains. An experienced hillwalker was reported overdue in the Cairngorm mountains, southeast of Inverness last night. He was found safe and well by rescue teams. He was fully prepared, food and water for 30 hours, had a bivvy bag (in which he spent the night), had maps and a compass - except the compass broke in a stumble, and he consequently got lost when mist shrouded his location. The next morning, he rang the emergency services on his mobile phone and he was located and assisted off the hill, unharmed and none the worse for his experience.

A family with a child had to be assisted off a mountain near Ben Nevis this morning, when the weather closed in on Carn Dearg Beag. This peak, 1,010 metres high, stands just under 2 miles north of Ben Nevis. Now, the weather can close in on you unexpectedly at all times in the mountains. However, I would not have gone into the mountains myself today - they were forecasting hurricane force winds at the summits early this morning.

  1. Anyone who takes a child up a mountainside in weather conditions like that is irresponsible.  I cannot understand their mentality.  Lets hope it has scared them from doing anything similar and risking their child's life.
