Hurricane update - 20 October

The last 6 weeks of the hurricane season are looming, and all quiet on the Atlantic front. Tropical storm Kiko will probably be the last hurricane of the East Pacific season, turning into a category 1 hurricane tomorrow. There is an outside chance it could swipe the southern end of Baja California.

My focus this afternoon is on typhoon Kajiki, which will strafe the Japanese islands of Iwo To within 12 hours. The centre of the storm will pass the islands within 25 miles, which means they're going to see winds in excess of 100 knots (115 mph). Kajiki is a small storm; galeforce winds only extend for 90 miles from the centre. It will get swept up in the westerly flow within 48 hours and lose its identity.

    We are thinking about a Mexican Rivera Cruise in January.  That's from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, then Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and back to L.A.  But I've heard the weather can be rough down there during that time frame.  The last thing I want is to get stuck in a hurricane. Linda in WA
