Thursday 11 October - Tarbert to Uig

On arrival at Tarbert, we had to wait for about twenty minutes until the ferry arrived. It was still overcast and dreich. The ferry terminal is colourful when compared to the functional affair here in Stornoway. Nothing wrong with it, but they are going to do that up. Back to Harris, where the MV Hebrides, a smaller vessel than the Ullapool ferry, promptly left 5 minutes early at 11.45 am. Seems to be the norm nowadays. It was a calm crossing, which took us southeast, past Scalpay and about 15 miles south of the Shiant Isles. We then approached Skye, west of  the northeastern Trotternish peninsula. Low cloud impeded a full appreciation of the scenic beauty, unfortunately. On arrival at Uig, at 1.30pm, we were taken by taxi bus (free of charge) from the disembarkation point to the ferry terminal. The bus to Portree, the main town in Skye, was not due until 2.45pm. It was a cool if not cold afternoon, and there was little incentive to view either the beerplace, the restaurant place or the ferry terminal place. Drab, is the word for that area of Uig. Should hasten to add that this is a different Uig from the district in West Lewis. Some holiday makers thought a bus was due at 2pm, but this was on a timetable dated 7 February 2007, which had since been superseded.

  1. I love the picture of the church, nestled in what I would call a valley.   I am struck by how uncluttered and clean the towns appear. And the land is so vast and natural.  It truly looks lovely.  I see the sky is a bit ominous in some of the photos.  I was also surprised to see how big the ferry is. it looks like a small cruise ship!  Great photos, I enjoyed them very much.
