Continuing windy, with Aeolus blowing at near-galeforce. 36 mph is force 7. It is a grey, overcast day, but there are chinks in the clouds. One of our guests hobbled off on the ferry this morning, but not after he had to locate his carkeys. You normally have to be present at the terminal 45 minutes before sailing time (7.15 am), but he didn't appear there until 7 am. I think he did make it, but the ferry was 15 minutes late leaving for Ullapool.
That village on the Scottish mainland has banned the use of plastic carrierbags in shops, and has issued their residents with linen shopping bags. Plastic bags are available at a charge. A local person, speaking on BBC Highland News, said that they could now get down to the business of pulling the bags out of trees, carparks and the sea. Plastic carrier bags kill marine creatures like turtles, who mistake them for their fave food, jellyfish. Other creatures also eat them, making it impossible for them to ingest their food.
A hopeful development for women, as a test will come on the market which can show up developing breast cancer. It works by detecting abnormal genetic markers in the bloodstream which point to a developing tumour. In conjunction with a mammogram, this could help to boost the early detection rate of the cancer.

That was an interesting read on breast cancer Guido. Lets hope it becomes more accurate and free to all men and women whose families have histories of breast cancer in their genes.
ReplyDeletePlastic bags are a nightmare. Idiots who walk their dogs wrap their 'empties' in them and sling them into trees for posterity. Let alone the poor creatures at sea dying because of them too.
I never accept them now and keep my own bags in the boot for transferring them into. Its plastic cartons and bottles which need phasing out now. Butcher meat to apples or tomatoes are wrapped in them....there's no need.
I can fill one of the council's blue bins weekly with plastic milk bottles and meat wrappings etc. Yes they get recycled. But I have to take them to the standing skip bins which receive them up in ou local supermarket a mile and ahalf away . Not everyone has that time.
We need to educate manufacturers too.

What a wonderful example to set for the rest of the world. I'm surprised those plastic bags haven't been banned yet. I know I would be the first on the bandwagon to use the cotton bags. I only use paper now and I re-use those bags so there is no waste. I've been talking to Doc about buying re-usable nylon bags at our local market. Then there will be no recycling needed. Maybe there is hope for the beautiful creatures of this world, if only the human ones could learn to live a little wiser. (Hugs) Indigo
ReplyDeleteI think banning the plastic bags is a good idea and I am very guilty of using them daily as they are what I put my used litter in for disposal. I know there has been some talk here in the States and I think San Fansisco has banned them. I feel bad using them but I currently don't have another method in place. I suppose I could use the manure pit.

I think it would be a great idea to ban those bags!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad they now have a new test for breast CA. That's great!

I think it's a wonderful idea to ban those bags, what a nuisance they are for everyone. It would be great if we could all get in the habit of bringing our own bags to the store. Have a nice day. Joni
ReplyDeleteThis is a good idea Guedo. I think that it all started in a large visit down around here. Think a lot of places are going the same way and good on them...mind you or Co op's plastic bags are biodegradable and disintrigate after a few weeks, (One did in my supply of bags...I thought I had been attacked by mice " when I was showered with fragments of bag !!) Lol Sybil x
ReplyDeleteMost of our stores are trying to switch away from the plastic bags. They take like 200 years to disintegrate in the land fill. Once I get my grociers unloaded, I've been putting them back into my car and re-using them when I go back to the store. One of the stores I shop at, gives you 5 cents credit for each bag you reuse.
