Wednesday notes

Afternoon from a dreich Stornoway. We've had rain and wind earlier today, but there is little sign of improvement. Oh well, the sun will return at some stage.

As I said a day or so ago, petrol prices here have reached £1.19 per litre (nearly $11 a gallon). Mind you, I've heard of a petrol pump in the Isle of Coll, just west of Mull, which charges £1.30 a litre. I remember the days when a gallon of petrol in this country only cost 60p (it is now £5.40). A question has now been asked of the Chancellor of the Exchequer for a reduction in fuel duty for the islands. About three-quarters of the price of fuel in the UK is due to tax.

A former Bosnian Serb general, Dragomir Milosevic, was jailed for 33 years at the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague. He was responsible for the siege of Sarajevo in the Balkans War during the 1990s. The Bosnian capital was entrapped, and Bosnian Serb forces targeted the civilian population, killing 14,000 in the process. A life sentence was demanded. Milosevic (apparently no relation to the former Yugoslav president) is aged 65.

  1. We will all be going back to horse and carts soon Guido. I must admit I don't use my car daily only for getting my weekly shop generally.

Bosnian Serb general, Dragomir Milosevic will die in prison then...no doubt he will manage to be looked after comfortably by some empath working there.
Not so those who died during the siege.  They have gone forever!

  2. OMG who could afford to drive at those fuel costs?  It is about 3.40 a gallon here in the states for my fuel which is diesel.  Goodness, I couldn't afford to drive as a fill up would be $275!!!

  3. I've seen diesel for as much as $3.69 a gallon, but the last time I gassed up my Toyota, it was $3.07 for a gallon of regular unleaded.  My car gets about 20 miles per gallon which is not that great compared to some. I have limited my driving, going out 3 times a week to excersise at Curves and adding stops here and there on those trips, if necessary.  The rest of the week, unless it's something real special, my car rests under the carport.  No cruising around just for the fun of it.  Linda in WA

  4. I'm glad he was caught and jailed.

Approximately $11./gallon makes the cost here seem reasonable.  For a moment.  To get very far, it's costly all the same.

  5. OMG $11.00 a gallon! And I complain about ours being $2.97! At the prices you pay it would take $253.00 just to fill my tank!!!! How in the world do you guys do it?
