Zimbabwe's president has come in for a tongue-lashing from Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, during a EU / Africa summit. She suggested Mr Mugabe had damaged the image of Africa. In riposte, Zimbabwe's leader stated that Europe was being used as a mouthpiece by Great Britain. Incidentally, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown boycotted the summit as a protest against Mr Mugabe's presence.
Robert Mugabe has blamed the woes of his country, oft cited on this blog, squarely on interference by its old colonial power, Great Britain. Zimbabwe is economically breaking apart under 15,000% inflation, 80% unemployment and a steady stream of refugees heading for South Africa. Mr Mugabe holds considerable credit in certain parts of the African continent, as he was one of the freedom fighters who fought for independence from his country. His declarations now, in 2007, are as far removed from reality as you get.
However, bearing in mind the priorities of world power United States of America, it seems unlikely that Mr Mugabe will be ousted in much the same fashion as one Saddam Hussein back in 2003. Zimbabwe has none of the economic imperatives that Iraq has.
Oh well, I'm repeating myself.

I would be repeating myself as well Guedo....Oh how I weep for those poor people. And I will NEVER understand how the other African countries fail to see what is happening to their fellow man. Sybil x
