Very blustery day today - the rain stopped only recently. Temperature has shot up to 8C; winds are touching galeforce and gusting to stormforce. Quite wild.
Rwanda was shaken by an earthquake, measuring 5 on the Richter scale. As a result, 21 people were killed, many when a church collapsed. The country lies on a faultline in the earth's crust, which has spawned a volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. Many millions of years from now, east Africa as we know it will drift away east, much like India did before. Its collision with the Asian continent gave rise to the Himalayan mountains.
After a week with 3 tropical cyclones, two of these have died away and number 3 is on the way out. I am now watching two new ones, which may form in the Indian Ocean, far away from land. One is located far east of the island of Diego Garcia, in the middle of the basin, and the other south of Indonesia. The latter, if it develops further, might pose a threat to Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology there is keeping an eye on this - atmospheric conditions are becoming less than favourable for a cyclone to form.
